FRIDA | The Young Feminist Fund is a new initiative that funds and strengthens the participation and leadership of young feminist activists globally. The Fund is a collaborative effort between the Association for Women’s Rights in Development (AWID), The Fondo Centroamericano de Mujeres/Central American Women’s Fund (FCAM) and an experienced group of young feminist activists from different regions of the world.

The Fund’s Theory of change derives from the core belief that women’s movements are strengthened when young feminist activists and their organizations are provided with the resources and capacity they need to mobilize resources for their work. Supporting young feminists is key to the expansion, rejuvenation and sustainability of women’s movements and organizations, both now and in the future.

The Fund defines young feminist activists as young people from across the gender spectrum committed to advancing gender equality and women’s rights through explicitly feminist means. Based on the understanding that discrimination occurs within all societies, the term ‘feminist’ is used to refer to individuals working within women’s movements or in other social movements to advance the rights equality, justice, dignity, freedom and safety of women, girls and marginalized groups.

Our Mission is to provide accessible, strategic and responsive funding for young feminist-led initiatives. We aim to strengthen the capacity of young feminist organizations to leverage resources for their work and to increase donors’ and allies’ commitments to resourcing young feminist activism.

Our Vision is for a world free of inequalities where human rights are respected and where young women and girls are empowered to participate fully and effectively in the decisions that affect their lives and livelihoods.

FRIDA works toward a future where, among other things, young women and girls live their lives free from violence and poverty, can obtain an education and control decisions about their bodies. FRIDA believes that not only is supporting young women-led initiatives important in itself but that no lasting solutions to the world’s major challenges can be effective if young women are left out. To this end, we envision progressive, multi-generational women’s movements that are strong, effective, well-resourced and that reflect the diversity of women’s rights organizing globally.

FRIDA believes in the power of young people as agents of change and promotes progressive youth leadership through our grantee partners and the initiatives we support. We believe that diversity in experience, identity and opinion are crucial to a strong women’s movement. Our core values are:

Flexibility • Resources • Inclusivity • Diversity • Action

We practice these values by: respecting the judgment and self-determined strategies of young feminists and young feminist groups; respecting cultural diversity in beliefs and visions; ensuring multigenerational movement building and collaboration, and; employing dynamic, creative and practical ways of supporting the needs of young feminists.
