Genero (Journal, since 2002), former: Ženske studije (Journal, 1995-2002)

type=digital_archives

Statement:
Genero: časopis za feminističku teoriju i studije kulture ("Genero: Journal of Feminist Theory and Cultural Studies") is Belgrade Women’s Studies Center major serial publication and a joint publishing project of BWSC and the Center for Gender and Politics at the Faculty of Political Sciences in Belgrade (from the issue 13/2009). Genero was established in 2002.

Before its decision to introduce Genero, Women’s Studies Center published its first journal Ženske studije ("Women’s Studies"), from 1995 to 2002, with an idea to popularize feminist theory in the region. Ženske studije still represent a valuable resource for students and researchers of feminist theory, continental philosophy and theories of art and literature. BWSC published 15 issues of Ženske studije, and their editors were Jasmina Lukić (1995-2000) and Branka Arsić (2000-2002). 13 issues of Ženske studije are archived on our webpage and can be downloaded for free.

In 2002, Women’s Studies Center decided to change the journal’s name and concept. After the publication of issue 14/15 of Ženske studije, the Center launched a new journal, under the title Genero: časopis za feminističku teoriju ("Genero: a Journal of Feminist Theory"), with Biljana Dojčinović and Jelisaveta Blagojević as editors from 2000 to 2007. Their main idea was for Genero to publish predominantly texts of “authors from Serbia and the region…Genero aims to become a forum for discussing different problems of gender theory in the region.” Another important idea was for the journal to become a space in which students interested in these topics would also have the opportunity to publish their work, thus encouraging the voices of the younger gen(d)eration. The journal’s design and name are also in the service of focusing on the primary target group – young people, around 25 years old.

Between 2002 and 2007, 11 issues of Genero were published. Although initially conceived as a quarterly publication, due to financial problems, it was published once a year, usually as a double issue. From 2008 to 2011, the journal was not published due to lack of financial resources.

Towards the end of 2010, the Center decided to resume publishing Genero, with a new editorial board and a new subtitle. During 2011, the Center published four issues for the years (12/2008, 13/2009, 14/2010, 15/2011), thus establishing the journal’s continuity. Genero: a Journal of Feminist Theory and Cultural Studies is now an annual publication, containing academic papers from the fields of feminist theory and cultural studies, as well as science, culture and theory of art, with an emphasis on an interdisciplinary and critical approach. Genero’s authors are both from Serbia and from abroad, writing in Bosnian/Croatian/Serbian and English.
