Slutwalk Melbourne 2011

type=digital_archives

Official Blogpost

The first ever SlutWalk Melbourne is over.. for now. We think this is the beginning of something new and powerful, and are busy listening to your feedback, engaging with the criticism and exploring ideas for further action.

It was a magnificent day – more than we could have possibly hoped for. After having only announced the date of SlutWalk Melbourne three weeks prior, the response from the public, the media and importantly, survivors of assault and rape was overwhelming. Around 2500 people gathered on the steps of the Victorian State Library and then marched proudly through the city streets, with inspiring placards and banners and much chanting and joyous celebration of who we all are.

Thank you to our speakers, Dr Leslie Cannold, Monica Dux, Ursula Benstead, Elena Jeffreys and Cody Smith for your inspirational speeches. For those who weren’t able to be there, or who couldn’t quite hear all of our speeches, we have provided transcripts for you. To read them, use the drop down menu on the SlutWalk Melbourne 2011 page.

We’d like to acknowledge and thank the Victorian Police, The City of Melbourne, The State Library of Victoria and a massive thank you to SamuraiAV for providing the PA equipment.

Thank you so much to the thousands of people who came out to stand and march in solidarity with us at the first SlutWalk Melbourne, and a very big thank you to those who volunteered their time to marshall the event and keep the trams at bay! You were all amazing.
